START WITH ART: Christ in the Storm on the Sea of Galilee

Welcome/welcome back! We're starting our day by examining the stolen artwork(!) pictured below. Take a look at the artwork then read the questions to the students/children in your life and see how starting your day with art can ignite creativity and critical thinking!

On March 18, 1990, Guards at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston admitted two men posing as police officers responding to a disturbance call. The thieves bound the guards and looted the museum, taking 13 works of art. The theft remains unsolved.

This was one of the works stolen:

Title: Christ in the Storm on the Sea of Galilee

Artist: Rembrandt Van Rijn

Date: 1633

Medium: Oil on canvas

Dimensions: 160 x 128 cm

Start with Art Questions:

  • What do you see happening in Rembrandt's painting "Christ in the Storm on the Sea of Galilee"?

  • What techniques does the artist use to show the weather? Is it windy? Do you think it is cold?

  • Put yourself in the shoes of one of the people on the boat. What emotions might you be experiencing in this moment?
