 WATERLILY POND

Let's paint peaceful ponds! Open the lesson plan for the lesson and links to the artworks!

Students will create a Monet-inspired Water Lily Pond with this hands-on painting and collage project! Students will start by drawing ripples on blue paper to create a wax resist, then use sponges and watercolors to layer soft reflections. Once dry, they’ll cut their pond into an organic shape and add lily pads and delicate tissue paper flowers. This project encourages students to experiment with texture, movement, and color blending.

POPPY FIELD TRIFOLD

Discover the Poppy Field near Argenteuil—the teacher guide can be found here!

Step into Monet’s world with this Poppy Field Trifold project! Inspired by Monet’s love of nature, students will create a foldable Impressionist landscape using watercolors. They’ll experiment with layering colors, blending warm and cool tones, and using short, dabbing brushstrokes to capture depth and movement. This project encourages creativity and an appreciation for how Impressionists captured the beauty of the outdoors!

PAINTING EN PLEIN AIR

Let students experience painting en plain air! Find the step-by-step lesson plan here.

Painting en plein air was fundamental to Monet's process and the Impressionist movement. We’ve provided the tools to help students step outside and experience painting like Monet! Pack up your paints, then find a spot on campus to observe how light, color, and atmosphere change in real time. Using quick brushstrokes and layered colors, students will capture their own outdoor scene—just as Monet did in his iconic landscapes.

Box Bonus: Meet Madame Monet

Inspired by Claude Monet’s iconic painting Woman with a Parasol, this bonus cutout of Madame Monet brings Impressionism to life in a fun, interactive way. Students can color and assemble their own version of Monet’s wife, complete with a movable umbrella attached with a brad. It’s the perfect hands-on extension to explore movement, outdoor scenes, and the personal world behind Monet’s art. A lovely keepsake—and a creative connection to one of Monet’s most famous works!
