PAGE PACKS

Ready to teach Medival Art? Find historical insights and fun facts in our teacher’s guide here!

Our hand-drawn Medieval coloring sheets invite students into the rich and mysterious world of knights, castles, tapestries, and illuminated manuscripts. With opportunities to add their own details and patterns, students can explore symbolism, storytelling, and style from the Middle Ages. Page Packs can be used independently or in groups, inspiring creativity while introducing one of history’s most fascinating artistic eras.

ILLUMINATED INITIALS

Let’s illuminate! Open the lesson plan to explore instructions and historical inspiration.

In this hands-on project, students will create their own Illuminated Initial inspired by medieval manuscripts. They’ll begin by sketching their initial with bold outlines, and filling it with decorative flourishes, vines, and medieval motifs. Students will then use paint, metallic accents, or colored pencils to bring their letter to life. This project encourages attention to detail, creativity, and an appreciation for art as storytelling.

ROSE WINDOWS

Discover the beauty of Medieval rose windows—find the teacher guide and inspiration here!

Inspired by the magnificent stained-glass windows of Notre Dame, students will design and create their own miniature “rose window” ornament. Using translucent materials and bold outlines, they’ll experiment with light, symmetry, and color to mimic the glow of real stained glass. Once complete, each ornament can be hung in the classroom or a sunny window to catch the light. This project encourages creativity, patience, and appreciation for the artistry of Medieval cathedrals!

UNICORN TAPESTRY

Step into the enchanted world of Medieval art with this collaborative flower collage! View the full lesson plan here.

Inspired by The Unicorn Rests in a Garden from the famous Unicorn Tapestries, students will each contribute a hand-crafted flower to create a collective garden scene. They’ll explore Medieval symbolism while using colorful paper, scissors, and imagination, students will cut and assemble flowers to surround a central unicorn figure. This group project fosters teamwork, individual creativity, and a deeper appreciation for narrative art in the Middle Ages.

Bonus: Villard de Honnecourt’s Sketches

Introduce students to Villard de Honnecourt, a 13th-century artist and architect known for his sketchbook of designs, patterns, and geometric studies. Show examples of his work and guide students to observe the geometric shapes hidden in his sketches. Ask: What shapes do you see? How do they form the basis for animals, architecture, and faces?
