PAINT WITH SCISSORS

Ready to paint with scissors? Open the lesson plan to start creating!

Step into Matisse’s world with this Colorful Cut-Outs project! Inspired by Matisse's iconic paper collages, students will create bold, abstract compositions using shapes they cut themselves. The students will explore color contrasts, organic and geometric forms, and the expressive power of arrangement. This project encourages creative freedom while helping students understand how Matisse used scissors like a paintbrush to “draw with color.” Just add scissors!

THE OPEN WINDOW

Discover Matisse's Open Window—the teacher's guide can be found here!

Look through Matisse’s eyes with this Open Window Scene project! Inspired by his famous window painting, students will design their own view—real or imagined—through a beautifully framed window. They’ll draw and color a vibrant scene, then carefully cut open the window panes to reveal a layered, dimensional work of art. This project invites imagination, perspective, and a sense of place
—just like Matisse’s own colorful views of the world.

BEYOND THE BOWL

Dive in to the Goldfish Tank! Find the step-by-step lesson plan here.

Inspired by Matisse’s famous goldfish painting, this project starts with goldfish and a tank! Using vibrant oil pastels, students will design and color the space around the goldfish, imagining the scene beyond the glass. Will it be a quiet room, a lush garden, or something entirely imaginary? This project encourages creative thinking, bold color choices, and an appreciation for how Matisse turned simple moments into vibrant masterpieces.

Box Bonus: Stick Drawing

Draw like Matisse with this Stick Drawing project! Inspired by Matisse’s unconventional technique, students will use a crayon-on-a-stick to sketch expressive figures and forms. With tape, paper, and plenty of creative freedom, students will experience the bold, flowing lines that defined works like The Dance. How easy was it to draw from a distance? This project encourages students to think big, loosen up, and explore new ways of making marks.
